Communications and Earth Observations (EO) are two major applications of satellites in terms of number of satellites in orbit and industrial revenues.
Ever reducing launch cost and innovations have allowed smaller satellites to be placed in low earth orbits (LEO) economically. This has in turn increased the number of satellites being launched for more purposes and the volume of data so generated and exchanged has been increasing exponentially. Such proliferation usually leads entrepreneurs and private sectors looking to innovate and monetize.
An update of satellite Internet and an introduction to EO will be presented.
Background of Dr. Stephen W. Cheung :
Stephen is currently adjunct professor of physics at the University of Hong Kong where he teaches a course in the MSc program in Space Science. He began his career as a research scientist at a NASA funded satellite program at Stanford University. He later joined Varian Medical Systems, a major supplier of radiation therapy systems—use of X-rays to treat cancers. He was head of microwave systems at Accuray Inc., a Silicon Valley company using robots to deliver precision radiation therapy. He was principal investigator of special projects funded by the government that earned Accuray a national award in 2013. He holds several US patents related to X-rays and is author of two books on microwave technology.
Dr. Cheung worked in Hong Kong for 10 years. He was general manager of the Electronics Division at the Hong Kong Productivity Council and later Exec VP of a consumer electronics company.
Background of Mr. KK Hau :
KK has served for thirty years in the Hong Kong Government, in support to the administration of the Innovation and Technology Fund, and in setting up/managing Hong Kong’s primary reference standards for physical measurements. Before joining the civil service, KK has the opportunity to be exposed to advanced technologies when working for Cathay Pacific Airways and Varian Associates.
An electronics hobbyist since school days, Mr. Hau is now engaged in innovating electronic circuit topologies for power control as well as arithmetic signal processing. So far he has disclosed more than 13 inventions through patents.
Mr. Hau obtained his degrees B Sc Eng and M Phil (electronics) from the University of Hong Kong. Recognizing the importance of health, he has been pursuing a great interest in alternative medicine and reaping real benefits from studies in human physiology and nutrition.
